Saindo de madrugada seguimos sentido Rio de Janeiro, desviamos na Garganta do Registro e seguimos por mais 17 km em estrada de terra. Este acesso é conhecido como a parte alta do Parque Nacional do Itatiaia. A partir desde ponto a paisagem muda, e conforme subimos as matas darão lugar aos campos rupestres compostos por rochedos e vegetação rasteira.
Um lugar ímpar de montanhas cuja temperatura no inverno chega abaixo de zero. Os dias ensolarados enganam os menos avisados, pois nesta altitude e frio e vento são constantes. Uma região que já esteve coberta de neve mais de uma vez.
A partir da portaria do parque seguimos a pé por uma estradinha até o início da trilha. Deste ponto já temos uma bela visão da montanha que nos espera. Em três horas de caminhada e após uma “escalaminhada” final, alcançamos o cume.
O Morro do Couto está a 2.680 m de altitude com uma extensão de cinco quilômetros. Neste caso o acesso ao topo é pelo lado direito da montanha passando por duas antenas.
Do topo tem-se uma vista incrível de vários picos do Planalto de Itatiaia. Podemos avistar a Pedra do Altar, Pico das Agulhas Negras, Pico das Prateleiras e Pedra da Tartaruga.
